• Blueleaf Energy and Univergy International have announced the creation of Hinode Energy, a specialised large scale solar energy platform in Japan.
• Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, Hinode Energy will develop an initial portfolio of over 200 MW across the country.
Blueleaf Energy, a portfolio company of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, and Univergy International have formed a joint venture, Hinode Energy KK (“Hinode”), which will develop large-scale solar plants in Japan.
Japan is one of the world’s largest solar energy markets and offers significant opportunity for further growth. To achieve its goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, the share of power generated by renewables in Japan’s energy mix needs to triple by 2050.
José Antonio Millán, CEO of Hinode Energy, said: ‘Solar already accounts for 87% of Japan’s total renewable energy capacity, but if we’re to achieve net zero, we need to further accelerate the deployment of this critical technology. It’s an extremely exciting time for Hinode and Japan’s growing renewable energy industry.’
Sol Proops, Interim CEO of Blueleaf Energy, said: ‘We are delighted to be partnering with Univergy on this important new venture. Hinode Energy brings together local insight and development experience with engineering expertise and financial capability to help drive Japan’s green energy transition.’
Ignacio Blanco CEO of Univergy, said: ‘Univergy has been an active player in Japan’s solar market since 2012. By bringing together the collective expertise and experience of Univergy and Blueleaf, Hinode will deliver world-class solar energy projects to help Japan achieve its decarbonization goals.’
